Dr Elsey’s Precious Cat litter line is another staple in our household. This line was created by Dr. Bruce Elsey, who is a 35-years veteran feline-only vet. I can’t imagine how many lint roller he would have to consume on a daily basis….. Kidding aside, I like that they try to give back to the community through their shelter partners program which offers free shelter kits. The line offers a few variations depending on the degree of odor control needed (listed below in order of lowest to highest).
- Precious Cat Classic Premium – best for one-cat
- Precious Cat Ultra Premium – best for multi-cat household
- Precious Cat Ultra Scented – best for multi-cat and if you like it scented
Size: Available in 18 lbs (8.2 kg), 20 lbs (9.1 kg), and 40 lbs (18.1 kg)
Packaging: Plastic bag or box (for 20 lbs only)
Scent: None noticeable for Classic and Ultra. Ultra Scented has a light scent once spent.
Ingredients: “Sodium Bentonite 100%”
They come in either a 20 lbs-box or 18 and 40 lbs-plastic bag. These cat litters are the main reason I got Amazon Prime. The 40 lbs bag is big and the slick plastic material made it awkward to carry, especially up two flights of stairs. Seriously a workout! I gave in and figured I should let someone else do the heavy lifting (thank you UPS dude who now knows me by name and knows where I live). One thing to note if you get it through Amazon, they do not package it well and I have received a ripped bag in the past. Amazon was quick to rectify it though.

IN THE BOX:
The brand promises that the cat litter is designed with the right texture and particle size for a good “dig-a-bility”.
SCENT & ODOR CONTROL:
Opening the package, I was able to detect minimum scent but nothing that would choke anyone who is sensitive to fragrance.
While I am not sure if it has “superior odor control” as advertised, it does a reasonable job to control the odor. They are best for someone who cleans their box on a regular basis (i.e. not waiting until three days in between cleaning) as I was starting to notice my apartment smelling like cat litter any longer than that.
OUT OF THE BOX:
Although it forms a tight urine clump, the resulting clump is rock hard like a cement. This is another reason to make sure that you clean frequently with this litter, unless you are ok with your cats pawing through concrete soccer balls. On the positive side, it addresses one of the top complains about litter, where it crumbles while being scooped.
It tracks no more than average so there is nothing to complain about on this department.
While it promises to be “99.9% dust free”, I find it to be slightly more dusty than other products that has made similar claim, such as this one.
Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Litter 3.5 out of 5
It is an average performing cat litter with a few minor workable cons. While it does not shine in any one area, it does averagely well in ALL areas, making it a dependable workhorse.
- The best price among the brand name clumping cat litter.
- They give back to the community.
- Rebate for new customer.
- Hard clumps, which eliminates the need to overscoop in order to clean the crumblies.
- Heavy and awkward bag.
- Really hard clumps (yes it is a pros but also cons). It can be hard on joints for older cats to dig.
- The odor control, tracking and dusting is slightly worse than other clumping litter.
If you have one cat in the house, Precious Cat Classic Premium would be sufficient. If you have multi-cat, Precious Cat Ultra Premium or Precious Cat Ultra Scented is preferred for that extra odor control.
